Ceara Conway

In 2024 I was invited by Cartoon Saloon, a world renowned animation studio based in Kilkenny, with five Academy Award® and two Golden Globe® nominations and many award wins including BAFTA® and Emmy® to compose a song for a new animation short called EIRU. A powerful story written and directed by Giovanna Ferrari.
My brief was to explore the Goddess & Saint, Bridget, and her archetypal attributes in the context of the present day. To write and record a song that calls forth a more balanced way of being, of using the power that we have, for good, instead of destruction, dominance and war. My song lyrics draw upon and subvert an old Irish chant that I discovered written by Morrigú, a chant marking the end of the matrilineal line the day that Bridget’s son Ruadhán was killed by a weapon he fashioned for himself. In the song, I am reversing this curse/this chant, and subverting it's message, calling forth for a rebalancing of power, and how it is used in our world.
Within the song there is a line inspired by a traditional Irish folk practice where in the spring time, a person wouid beat on the earth to call forth new life, “ buail an cré, s’ glaoi ar gnéart” . Old beautiful Gaelic phrases from a Blessing of Bridget, taken from the Carmina Gadelica are also threaded through the song.
Amhrán EIRIU, was co written with the renowned composer Leo Pearson.
My thanks to Melanie Lynch, Artistic Director of Her Story Ireland, and to Professor and author Dr Mary Condren who was so so generous in sharing her academic resources on Saint Bridget with me.
